ESOMEPRAZOLE VIATRIS CONSEIL contains the active ingredient esomeprazole. It belongs to a group of medications called “proton pump inhibitors.” They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. This medication is used in adults for the short-term treatment of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (e.g., heartburn and acid regurgitation). Gastroesophageal reflux is the backward flow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus, which can become inflamed and painful. This condition can cause symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest that extends up to the throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Read the package insert carefully before use.
The recommended dose is 20 mg of esomeprazole (one capsule) per day.
It may be necessary to take the capsules for 2 or 3 consecutive days to see an improvement in symptoms. Treatment may last up to 2 weeks. Once symptoms have resolved, treatment should be discontinued.
If symptoms persist after 2 weeks of continuous treatment, the patient should be advised to see a doctor.

The capsules should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water. The capsules should not be chewed or crushed.
For patients with difficulty swallowing:
The capsules may also be opened and their contents dispersed in half a glass of still water. No other liquid should be used, as it may dissolve the enteric coating. Stir and drink the liquid with the granules immediately or within 30 minutes. Rinse the glass with half a glass of water and drink it. The enteric-coated granules should not be chewed.

Pregnancy:
Animal studies have not shown any direct or indirect adverse effects on reproduction. As a precaution, it is best to avoid using ESOMEPRAZOLE VIATRIS CONSEIL during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding:
It is not known whether esomeprazole or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. There are insufficient data on the effects of esomeprazole in newborns and infants. Esomeprazole should not be used while breastfeeding.
Drug treatment for gastroesophageal reflux is only considered when the following simple measures have failed to relieve the symptoms:
- Do not lie down within two hours of a meal;
- Do not bend forward (bend your knees to pick up objects);
- Do not wear clothing that compresses the abdomen (girdles, etc.) ;
- Raise the head of the bed by 5 to 10 cm by placing blocks under the legs or a thick pillow under the mattress;
- Avoid carbonated beverages; choose foods that are easy to digest.
These tips are intended to prevent acidic stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus during digestion.
If you smoke, continuing to smoke is a major obstacle to treatment; nicotine increases stomach acidity and reduces the effectiveness of the muscle that closes the junction between the esophagus and the stomach.
